The Barking Past bronze medallion, struck for the Japanese Akita – the matagi hunting dog bred in the mountains of northern Honshu to corner bear and hold it at bay until the hunter caught up. Named a Natural Monument by the Japanese government in 1931, the first dog breed ever protected that way.
